Hard Hat Leadership: Lessons from the Field

Preparing for the big game, tackling a major project, or relying on an expert to guide a complex medical equipment installation — each reveal something essential about humility, delegation, and the value of experts and staff. These lessons matter to everyone, but especially to leaders.

My third book continues the exploration I began in Plan to Pivot and deepened in Survival to Success. Where the first book distilled the challenges related to managing complex enterprises in the current era of hyper complexity, and the second mapped the emotional and strategic terrain of leading fast growing enterprises, this new volume brings those themes full circle. Through a lifetime of stories — some humorous, others downright harrowing — drawn from years in the New York City construction industry and more than two decades as an executive at the University of Virginia, I show how preparation, trust, and the courage to rely on others shape leaders at every stage of their journey.

Together, the three books form a practical trilogy: learning the importance of preparation, learning to lead, and learning to elevate others.
